The Problem

Downtown Baltimore’s Inner Harbor draws visitors, sports fans, and residents year-round, and the infrastructure keeping it all running has not kept pace. The district’s existing street bins were aging metal cans that lacked the capacity for busy corridors, leaving overflow bags sitting on sidewalks between pickups. The Downtown Partnership needed a solution that was easy for sanitation workers to manage and presentable enough for one of the city’s most visited public spaces. They also needed a solution that separated waste streams, with dedicated bins for landfill waste and recycling.

The Solution

CITIBIN’s BasketPlus solved both of their problems at once. An open-top bin for everyday drop-off connects directly to a lockable sidecar that holds up to four bags of overflow, keeping waste fully contained without any electronics or moving parts to maintain. Workers can service the units quickly, the public can use them without any instruction, and custom vinyl wraps gave the district a canvas for their brand messaging. The Downtown Partnership placed signs next to the new units asking the public to share their reaction — and the response was overwhelmingly positive. BasketPlus units now span 195 locations across the Inner Harbor.
